The
Capelets
The
most ancient Marseillan tradition, takes place
every summer in Marseillan town harbour. The
origins are lost in the mists of time but the
rules remain unchanged: contestants must try
to reach the end of a slippery mast, protruding
from a barge, and grab the two hats placed there.
The acrobatic antics and spectacular dives into
the harbour delight the crowds, as does the
accompanying traditional music of oboe and drums.
Traditional
Street Markets
There
is a traditional French market in the centre of
Marseillan every Tuesday morning all year round,
and a craft market every Friday evening in July
and August. There is a large Flea Market at Marseillan
Plage every Saturday and Sunday all year round.
Local
villages have market days too - Bessan has one
on Tuesdays
and Sundays for example.
At
6.30 on Sunday evenings the Maire and the Tourist
Office at Marseillan Plage have a welcome meeting
for all visitors to the town.
The
local tourist office will be pleased to provide
information on anything happening during your
visit.
Wine
Tasting
No
trip to France would be complete without a visit
to a vineyard for a little "degustation".
Not far from Marseillan on the route to Pezenas
you will stumble across Monsieur et Madame Moret
who will welcome you into their cave at the
Domaine
la Grangette to taste (without obligation
to buy) some of the nicest wines of the region.
His speciality is a Picpoul de Pinet Rose -
something unique to his vineyard.
